Tossounian was a prolific
innovator of the so-called "Istambouli" school of weavers, influenced by leading
Kum Kapi weavers such as Hagop
Kapoukjian, Zareh Penyamian and Garabed
Apelian. Tossounian rugs are recognizable by long pile, bright colours and red ends with a white stripe. He frequently used the figurative motifs of the "Sangusko carpets" of the 16th Century. These motifs are used in an unusual way, sometimes in a kind of personal fantasy. Tossounians collection of traditional and mythological animals includes reptiles, winged creatures, dragons, and elephants sometimes with riders, goats, deer and other creatures. |
