Turkish Master Weavers of the late 19th and 20th Centuries |
|
Hagop Kapoukjian |
||
| Hagop Kapoukjian, also known as Shishman
Hagop, was one of the late 19th Century master weavers of the Kum Kapi
area in Istanbul. He was, together with other great weavers such as Zareh Penyamian and Garabed Apelian
one of the leading influences in the so called "Istambouli" School of weavers. Some of the rugs surviving from Hagops workshops show a close resemblance to the rugs of the Salting Group. Some have a lyrical quality, inspired by Persian figurative art. Hagop later moved to Paris where he worked (wove and repaired rugs) until his death in the 1950s. |
