Turkish Master Weavers of the late 19th and 20th Centuries

Garabed Apelian

Garabed Apelian is associated with the weavers of the Kum Kapi area of Istanbul. His studio was located in Kadik Pasha near the Black Sea.

Apelian frequently uses floral patterns with birds and lovely colour combinations, including the occasional yellow ground. Usually there is a free sensuality in the quality and design of his rugs.

Together with Hagop Kapoukjian and Zareh Penyamian he was influential in the so-called "Istambouli" School of weavers of the time.

Apelian’s last masterpiece was never executed due to age and poor health.
