Kum Kapour Prayer Rug - Ottoman Stream
Dated last quarter of 19th Century 1875-1900

Kum Kapour Prayer Rug

Description

This magnificent rug is constructed of silk and metallic thread. Origin northwest Anatolia - last quarter of the 19th century. The carpet is signed "Barzeh" on the upper end, and inscribed in cartouche with the words "This too shall pass".

The rug offered is part of a group of very finely woven silk rugs, one of which is pictured here, produced in the Kum Kapour workshops. The Kum Kapour master weavers were inspired by the designs and outstanding workmanship of Savavid and Ottoman court rugs, to which they had easy access in nearby Istanbul collections, such as the Top Kapi Palace, as is apparent from this plate of a 17th century Top Kapi rug.

Traditionally, the weavings of Zareh Penyamian are considered the apex of Kum Kapour production. The superlative weave and aesthetic brilliance of this piece, however, demonstrates the uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship of the other lesser known Kum Kapour masterweavers.
